Community Colleges, previously known as junior colleges are two-year public colleges of higher education which is a distinct American creation. Students may transfer to a university or a liberal arts college after graduating from a Community College. These colleges play a major role in contributing towards California Economy thereby delivering quality education and work training as pre-requisites, thereby enabling students to take up jobs right after their associate degree.

Representing the largest higher education system in the United States, the California Community College System, created by the legislation in 1967, comprises of 109 community colleges in 72 community college districts in the U.S. state of California. It caters to more than 2.7 million students every year offering a horde of courses in a wide variety of streams. Since they are municipally-funded and designed to serve the education needs of students of the resident city, they are often referred to as ‘City colleges’ as in many Californian cities like Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Most students begin their career with CTE (Career Technical Education) classes at community colleges. The build-up of these courses provides interesting and rewarding career options. As it operates under an ‘open admission’ policy, admissions at community colleges can be secured with ease. There is also an advantage to all the high school top ranking students as they can complete their associate degree before high school graduation by participating in Post Secondary Enrollment Option programs. English as a Second Language is offered for non-native English speakers who wish to improve their English proficiency is offered at many colleges.

All the basic pre-requisites for transfer to degree institutions are provided by community colleges. The programs offered: Career Technical Education or vocational vary at each California community college campus and provide employment opportunities in fields such as law enforcement, computer and information technology, agricultural advances, animation graphics, finance, media, automobiles, logistics, management and many more. Other than the associate degree programs, these colleges also offer courses which provide cultural enrichment literature, linguistics, humanitarian sciences, mono acts, art and classical music.
